Barbara Gordon and Batman

Barbara Gordon made her first comic-book appearance in The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl! (1967) and was soon a member of the Batman Family, sometimes teamed up with Batman’s partner Robin, aka Dick Grayson.

In a later reboot, we discover Barbara first encountered Batman as a child, and that she studied martial arts under the tutelage of a sensei and became a star athlete.

Barbara was quick-witted, memorizing maps and blueprints of Gotham City, excelling in academics, and eventually earning her doctorate in library science before running the Gotham City Public Library.

Barbara meets billionaire Bruce Wayne en route to a costume ball. She intervenes when supervillain Killer Moth attempts to kidnap Wayne, leading to her crime-fighting career.

As the daughter of Gotham City’s police commissioner, Barbara knows quite a lot about corruption in the Gotham City Police Department ranks and believes Batman is a hero - a view that causes a rift with her father but Barbara isn’t the type of woman to back down from a fight.

Barbara Gordon and the Joker

Barbara Gordon’s life changed forever with the tragic flash of a revolver in Batman: The Killing Joke (1988).

After escaping Arkham Asylum, the Joker fled to Barbara’s apartment and shot her, paralyzing Barbara from the waist down.

It was part of the Joker’s villainous plan to drive Barbara’s father insane. After the shooting, the Joker took photographs and sent them to Commissioner Jim Gordon.

Unable to use her legs, Barbara was traumatized and depressed but she eventually rebounded to become Oracle, a tech-savvy crime-fighter who could assist the Bat-Family remotely from her wheelchair.

With her photographic memory and a genius for online research, Oracle soon became even more influential in the DC Universe as a computer expert, tactician, and team leader.

The rise of Oracle

Following the shooting, Barbara Gordon has a dream in which an all-knowing woman has her face (somewhat like the Oracle at Delphi in Greek mythology) and she adopts Oracle as her codename.

Not content to let her body waste away, the former star athlete trains under martial arts artist Richard Dragon, learns how to engage in combat from her wheelchair, and develops her upper-body strength.

Oracle makes her comic book debut in Suicide Squad #23, offering her services to the government's Task Force X and makes cameo appearances until her identity is finally revealed in 1990. Dennis O'Neil wrote Oracle as Batman's sole source of information in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1, firmly establishing her status as Batman's intellectual equal.

With her computer expertise, Oracle provides Batman with a constant stream of intelligence. In one crucial operation, Oracle hacks into Batman's communication device, alerting him that the Penguin has stored arms at spots around Gotham City. She asks Batman to use his ‘Disruptor’ to render the containers useless, as the police aren’t able to stop the Penguin.

In a world increasingly dominated by technology, Oracle also utilizes her expert skills as a hacker to broker information, gather and disseminate intelligence to law enforcement organizations, and assist members of the superhero community.

Gail Simone, who wrote BATMAN x SPYSCAPE, has described Oracle as “a brilliant master computer operator and one of the most fascinating characters in comics”.

“Even just sitting in a chair in a dark room by herself, she's tremendously compelling,” she added. “The DCU without her would be a much less interesting place.”

End of briefing. You are now ready to work with Oracle and the Dark Knight. BATMAN x SPYSCAPE needs your help to infiltrate Leviathan. The clock is ticking.
