Your briefing from SPYFLIX - brought to you by SPYSCAPE

Secrets of a Genre Favorite

Guest judge and Yale School of Drama graduate Laila Robins is known for badass roles. Many of us were first introduced to her kick-ass, on-screen presence when she glided down the stairs to welcome Steve Martin home in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. She recently sat down to talk to us about process, secrets and roles.

STEM secrets

SPYFLIX Official Selection Coded Bias chillingly reveals how much power technology holds over us and introduces us to a group of activists fighting back against human failings hardcoded into the algorithms and AI that run our lives. The racial biases explored in the film are also relevant across the broader STEM realm.

Censored secrets

Filmmaker Mirabelle Fréville came across a previously Top Secret 19-minute reel of film by accident. The footage in The Reel 11004 (a SPYFLIX Documentary Short finalist) will stay with you long afterward. We spoke to the French filmmaker about her journey, and about denouncing the first censorship of nuclear history.

Secrets of a Silver Lion winner

The Silver Lion award for best film direction at the 77th Venice Film Festival was handed to Kiyoshi Kurosawa for Wife of a Spy. The film is a historical thriller set in wartime Japan. We found a fascinating article in Japan Forward about the film, its director and the decision of the Venice Film Festival to hold the festival during the pandemic.

Judge’s corner: John Sipher

SPYFLIX Guest Judge John Sipher spent 28 years in the CIA, is a social media influencer and is busy working on fact-based thriller, Sabaya, starring Zoe Saldana. John recently shared his thoughts on SPYFLIX Documentary Feature How To Steal A Country, and we learned what he thinks of secret intelligence movies in general.

SPYFLIX is the new film and TV festival focused on secrets. Great new work selected by the talent behind hits such as Hunters, The Americans and Homeland will be available to stream FOR FREE until May 9th.
