Secret portals

For years writer/director India Dupré saw dramatic (and sometimes horrifying) scenarios play out on the other side of her apartment door. Her Ring doorbell camera had become a gateway to human drama, and her inclination to secretly observe her neighbors' experiences raised questions too compelling to ignore. Thus was born Ring, a 2021 SPYFLIX Narrative Short selection. The technical aspects of this story, told entirely from the POV of a doorbell cam, and the psychological questions it provokes made for a fascinating conversation with Dupré.

Secret spheres of influence

"The making of history and the construction of politics is done through violence," said Robert Fisk, veteran UK journalist and the focus of 2021 SPYFLIX Documentary Feature selection This is Not a Movie. Fisk, who died last year at the age of 74, spent most of his career reporting on the Middle East. He believed the infamous Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916 - the result of France and Britain secretly carving up the former Ottoman Empire for plunder - is the key to the ongoing Middle East conflict. The secret arrangement had dramatic repercussions which many believe are still affecting regional politics today. Judge’s corner: Joe Weisberg

Writer, producer, novelist and former CIA officer Joe Weisberg is best known as the Creator and Executive Producer of FX TV series, The Americans. His new book, Russia Upside Down - An Exit Strategy for the Second Cold War, will be available this fall. Joe, a 2021 SPYFLIX Festival Guest Judge, shared with us a few thoughts on 2021 SPYFLIX Narrative Short selection, Safe Space, as well as his brief experience in the CIA.
