Spy Hummingbird

Spying on shy creatures in their natural habitats is challenging, so a UK based production company created a Spy Hummingbird - a drone in disguise that spied on half a billion monarch butterflies in Mexico. As the monarchs don’t perceive the drone as a threat, the avian spy is able to get up very close and personal.

The secret to Affleck’s Led Zep deal on Argo

Ben Affleck wanted Led Zeppelin's seminal 'When the Levee Breaks' - the last track on Led Zeppelin IV (1971) - for a crucial moment in Argo. He’d already shot the scene with the needle being dropped on the first track of the album not the last - a deal breaker for the band. So what happened? Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell pushing MI:7

Luckey by name...

Palmer Luckey is not content with having invented Oculus Rift, the virtual reality headset. His new company, Anduril Industries, has developed a two-meter drone specifically for military operations. It can carry cameras, radio-jamming systems or lasers to spotlight targets, and has AI tuned to identify and track people, missiles and battlefield equipment. Thanks to Six Secrets reader @Enigma_Rosa for the tip.

In every kick-ass movie of the last fifty years, the word Ninja has conjured images of mythical superpowers. In fact, the ancient practice of Ninjutsu (the art of the Ninja) involves the use of unconventional warfare and guerilla tactics in spying, assassinations or battle. Killing without remorse was the practice - which led to questions about whether it should be classified as a martial art or not. Real life Ninjas, such as Stephen Hayes, have served as bodyguards to many global figures, including the Dalai Lama!
